Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 now supports Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP SP3, among other new features. You can use it to run other operating systems without modifying your hard disks or current installation of Windows.

I use Virtual PC to test my unattended dvd’s of Vista and XP. Also, i have tried many Live CD’s and Linux distros using Parallels Workstation virtual machines, but there is no support for linux in Virtual PC 2007 yet. Hopefully Microsoft will add it in the future.

Here’s a description from Microsoft:

Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2. You can run multiple operating systems at once on a single physical computer and switch between them as easily as switching applications—instantly, with a mouse click. Virtual PC is perfect for any scenario in which you need to support multiple operating systems, whether you use it for tech support, legacy application support, training, or just for consolidating physical computers.

You can even download virtual hard disks (VHD) from Microsoft to try them on Virtual PC 2007. As far as i remember, there are Windows Vista VHD, Office 2007 and Visual Studio 2008.

So, if you are among the people who haven’t tried Vista yet, now is the time to do so.

Check the system requirements to make sure you can run it.

“For Automation System such as HMI/SCADA testing, it will be better if use Virtual PC. It will help a lot before you create on Real PC. Especially for system integrator Virtual PC is solution to make test platform and test some configuration”.

SCADA with Database always use Industrial PC for HMI. How to make backup the PC SCADA? Please read simple Tips and Tricks to make Backup PC. “It’s important for your as Automation Engineer in Industries”

Making images of hard drives is a useful way of having backup copies of all your information, including your entire operative system.

For many years, only a few companies made this kind of programs and they were expensive. But now, there are some free alternatives that make this possible without spending any money. Besides, they are pushing commercial products to lower its prices because of the new competition.

The industry is lead by two applications, Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost. These two are great and include an impressive array of options that many of the free applications don’t have. But most users won’t use them anyway.

DriveImage XML

The first application i want to talk you about is DriveImage XML, from Runtime Software.

Official description:

DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives.

The program allows you to:

  • Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
  • Browse these images, view and extract files
  • Restore these images to the same or a different drive
  • Copy directly from drive to drive
  • Schedule automatic backups with Windows Task Scheduler

Macrium Reflect Free

The second one is Macrium Reflect Free.

Official description:

  • Create a disk image whilst running Windows using Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS).
  • Image to Network, USB, FireWire drives and DVD.
  • Built in scheduler.
  • 32 bit and native 64 bit versions.
  • Industry leading compression levels and speed.
  • Linux based Rescue CD with Network access and full GUI. Only 6.5MB in size!
  • Built in CD/DVD packet writing engine. Supports packet writing to DVD DL media with Windows Vista.
  • HTML log files.

No Excuses

There are free tools to make those important backup disk images. It is up to you which one to choose.

See on the Video Below:

1. Product description

The CP 5711 is an innovation of the existing SIMATIC NET CP 5512 for PGs/PCs with USB V2.0 ports. With its USB V2.0 connection, the CP 5711 can be used on many different computer platforms.
Innovation of the PG/PC connector technology for USB V2.0:The CP 5711 is connected via a USB V2.0 port, allowing flexible use of the module. USB V2.0 is available on many computer platforms and applications for the CP 5711 are therefore manifold. The CP 5711 can also be used on a USB V1.1 port, but the performance will be lower in this case.
Functionally compatible with the CP 5512, as well as PC Adapter USBApplications created for the CP 5512 can be used for the CP 5711 without any changes to the configuration or the user software. The CP 5711 is functionally compatible with the PC Adapter USB for engineering applications (e.g. STEP7)
+ 5 V Power supply from USB V2.0The communication processor is supplied with power from the USB port of the PC system.
+24 V optional external power supplyThe external 24 V power supply covers two application areas: – The power supply from the USB V2.0 port is not sufficient (power supply of the PC is too weak; USB ports are not designed for 500 mA USB standard) – PROFIBUS Termination is assured even when the USB cable is disconnected (active supply of the PROFIBUS connection termination)SIMATIC S7 or SITOP power supplies can be used to provide the external voltage supply.
Mechanical USB latchingAdditional mechanical latching of the included USB connecting cable on the housing of the CP 5711. This safeguards the USB connection in the case of mobile use and also for applications in switchboards.
Diagnostic information via LEDsFive LEDs are available on the CP 5711 communication processor to provide extensive diagnostics (power USB, power external, identify, Link/SF and Activity. – Power USB = module is supplied with 5 V from the USB port – Power Ext = module is supplied with 24 V from an external source – Identify = USB identification phase – startup phase of the module – Link/System Fault = two-colored LED (green/red) providing the user with status information: – the LED lights up green when subscribers are identified on the connected PROFIBUS network (Link Status). – the LED lights up red if an error occurs on the CP 5711.- Activity = the module has synchronized itself on the PROFIBUS network and the PROFIBUS token is available on the PROFIBUS network.
Mounting on a mounting rail (with optional accessories)A separate mounting bracket is available for use of the CP 5711 in switchboards and mounting on 35 mm standard rails.

The existing CP 5512 module with Cardbus technology will continue to be sold in parallel with the CP 5711. Our customers thus have flexibility and can decide freely whether they wish to use a vacant Cardbus slot, or a USB port to operate the relevant SIMATIC NET communication processor. An additional area of application are PC-based systems with no separate card slot and only USB ports.
